Beautiful Boxer er den roste debut film af den thailandske instruktør Ekachai Uekrongtham. Den er inspireret af den sande historie om thai kickbokseren Nong Toom Prinya Charoenphols liv, og fortæller den intense historie om hans opvækst i et lille samfund, i en familie, hvor hverdagen var præget af fattigdom. Han bliver drillet pga. sit delikate ydre, og han føler sig på et tidligt tidspunkt mere som kvinde end som mand. Da han en dag bliver tvunget til at forsvare en af sine venner, opdager han, at han har talent for kickboksing. Vi følger Nong Toom gennem hans ungdom i et kloster, hvor han energisk følger et stramt træningsprogram, og endelig i ringen, hvor hans mål er at vinde så mange kampe som muligt og dermed så mange penge som muligt, så han kan få en kønsskifte operation.

Parinya wanted to be a kickboxer but he always felt he was different. Born into Bangkok poverty, he starts his training and soon proves to excels at the sport. But he hides a secret, a desire to be a woman. As his career blossoms, so does he self-confidence in being himself, entering into the ring wearing make-up. However, it is only when he becomes a national champion, having raised enough funds, that he takes the bold move to have a sex change, changing his name to Nong Toon.
Beautiful Boxer is an uplifting tale of an extraordinary person that is part Rocky, part Ong-Bak. Director Ekachai Uekrongtham has crafted a beautifully stylish film which is very accessible to wider audiences. It's partly a coming-of-age movie, a biopic and there are touches of heart-stopping drama, comedy and even a sprinkling of magic realism. Its great strength, however, is in the central performance of former boxer Asanee Suwan, who plays Parinya/ Nong with sympathetic charm, determination and fragility. He adds balletic power to the action sequences which will thrill any fans of martial arts. A sumptuous tale that floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee. |
