| Beskrivelse:
The war has cast a dark shadow over the valley with many of its men killed in action and Paul worries because of the opportunism that has erupted. He is adamant that his trees should not be cut down for the Army and is appalled by people making profit from the war.
1916: Will Codsall's brother Sydney calls on the Squire from the Forestry Board to advise him about a money making opportunity. Dandy and Pansy finally find happiness.
1917: Paul is away at War. Claire has returned to nursing and Shallowford is now a convalescent home. Norman Eveleigh behaves badly but Claire redeems the situation.
1918: Paul returns on leave and Claire is overjoyed to have him home. He faces the task of telling his son Simon that his mother is dead. Claire tries to soothe the troubled Hazel Potter.
1919: News reaches the valley that the Squire is missing in action, presumed dead. This causes despair to Claire and the locals. James visits from London and gives the true version of Paul's fate.
