The story begins when nineteen-year-old Elizabeth becomes pregnant after a brief affair with a dashing actor. Shamed, she is forced to marry a widower with a large family who lives in the remote Beara Peninsula.
Elizabeth must come to terms with motherhood, her brutish husband, her stepchildren and the harsh realities of a rural existence.
