Historien fortælles fra en deling amerikanske soldaters perspektiv og begynder med 2. Verdenskrigs historiske D-dagsinvasion. Derefter bevæger den sig videre over stranden, da mændene begiver sig ud på en farlig specialmission. Kaptajn John Miller (Tom Hanks) skal føre sine folk bag fjendens linjer for at finde menig James Ryan, hvis tre brødre er blevet dræbt i krigen. Steven Spielberg's Oscar winning, epic, World War 2 drama is set against the backdrop of the Normandy landings.
